The Role of STI Testing

Infections like Chlamydia and Gonorrhea can increase your risk for complications during and after an abortion. That’s why we provide free, routine STI screening as part of your visit.

Testing is done with a simple urine sample, and if your results come back positive, we offer free treatment. Taking care of these infections before any further steps helps reduce the risk of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and other reproductive health issues.

Woman With Nurse

Understanding Your Options

Abortion is a medical procedure, and like any procedure, it involves risks, side effects, and eligibility criteria based on how far along you are. During your visit, we’ll provide medically accurate, unbiased information about:

  • Types of abortion procedures and how gestational age affects them
  • Physical and psychological risks
  • What to expect if you choose to continue or end the pregnancy

We do not provide or refer for abortions, but we believe every woman deserves to know the facts and have her questions answered before making plans for her pregnancy.

Pregnancy Testing & Ultrasound Confirmation

Young Female Patient Waiting In Doctor's Exam Room

When To Take A Test

The most reliable time to take a pregnancy test is on or after the day of your expected period. Testing too early can result in a false negative because your
body may not yet have produced detectable levels of hCG. If your test is negative but your period still hasn’t started, we may recommend scheduling a follow-up test.
If Your Test Is Positive

A positive result isn’t the end of the process—it’s the beginning of getting more information. A pregnancy test verifies if you’re pregnant, but only a limited confirmation ultrasound can tell you what’s actually happening. This scan checks for:

  • Viability – Is the pregnancy developing and growing?
  • Location – Is the pregnancy in the uterus or ectopic (outside the uterus)?
  • Gestational Age – How far along are you?

These details are essential before exploring your pregnancy options, including abortion.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

At Crystal Women’s Clinic, we use lab-grade urine pregnancy tests—the same quality used in clinical settings. These tests detect the hormone hCG and are more sensitive than most at-home options, especially when administered by trained medical staff.

During your appointment, you’ll provide a urine sample and receive your results within minutes. If your test is positive and a limited confirmation ultrasound is recommended, our medical team will perform the scan using safe, high-frequency sound waves—no radiation involved. The ultrasound is painless, usually takes less than 30 minutes, and is done in a private, supportive setting. In early pregnancies, a transvaginal scan may be recommended for clearer imaging. A transabdominal scan (over the stomach) is administered at 13 weeks gestation.

Our nurses will review your results with you and walk through what they mean medically and what next steps might be helpful.
