• If your pregnancy is progressing or if you have possibly had a miscarriage. According to experts, as many as 26% of all pregnancies end in a miscarriage. If an ultrasound does not detect a fetal heartbeat, it’s either too early or you have already miscarried.
• The location of your pregnancy. Most pregnancies form in the uterus, but some begin growing elsewhere. These pregnancies are considered ectopic and can be extremely dangerous, even life-threatening.
• How far along you are in your pregnancy (the gestational age). Although you may keep a calendar of your menstrual cycle, it’s not always easy to determine when you got pregnant. An ultrasound determines the number of weeks and days of pregnancy.
